Jan Barend Elwe (active 1777-1815): 'Mappe monde ou description du globe terrestre & aquatique', hand-coloured engraving, Amsterdam, dated 1792. The map was a part of the atlas 'Atlas de geheele Wereld', featuring 37 maps.
Partly hand-coloured, this map shows the latest carthographic situation known to man at the time. The four corners of the print are adorned with the four continents personified, Australia (Sydney was founded but four years later) and Antarctica not considered thus just yet. The central four figures represent the four cardinal virtues (prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance).
