Hand-coloured map of Flanders 'Flandria Commit' by Gerard Mercator, published in the Mercaor-Hondiusatlas, Jodocus Hondius, Amsterdam, 1613, 325 x 474 mm
Original hand-colored map by Gerard De Cremer (1512-1594), nicknamed Mercator, with typical border decoration in Renaissance style. Mercator's original copper plates, including the map here, were used by Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) for the publication of the Mercator Atlas.
The inscription "Cum Privilegio" protects the fruits of the mapmaker's labor from copyers. Mercator was accused of heresy in strange circumstances in 1544 and imprisoned for several months. Fortunately, Governor Maria of Hungary did not uphold his charges, and Mercator was able to continue to his work and enjoy his important government privileges after this incident.
