Kunichika, kabuki actor in a female role, oban tate-e, probably 1864-1878, signed Kunichika ga

 

The son of a proprietor of a public bath-house, Kunichika became Kunisada's student in 1848 and made his debut in 1852 with a small, scenic inset cartouche in a design by Kunisada from the actor series 'A collection of the provinces with honourable characters of Japan'. Like his teacher, Kunichika mostly designed actor prints and it is known that he spent time watching kabuki on stage and sketching the actors.

 

Condition: some minor holes to the paper, the top right corner with a part missing, some stains to the paper, overall in good condition.
