Prosper De Troyer, the grandfather of TV celebrity Mark Uytterhoeven, was a Belgian painter, draftsman and graphic artist who lived from 1880 to 1961. He passed his youth and education in Ghent, but he later settled in Mechelen. In his younger years, De Troyer walked the many paths of the Avant-Garde that led him to abstract cubism and even to futurism (rare in Belgian art). These years of formation were short-lived, in 1922 he resolutely returned to figuration, resulting in an expressionism influenced by New Objectivity, laced with humor. His work can be found in museums in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Mechelen and Ostend, among others.
In the quickly sketched, fleeting drawing we see here, modern life goes on as mundanely as ever. In a simple, yet strong composition, a car, symbol of the modern world, drives past a typical Flemish church. Modernity and tradition are not diametrically opposed to each other, but progress side by side.
