View of the Grand Beguinage of Brussels, engraved by Jacobus Harrewijn (1660-1727), from the 'Chorographia Sacra Brabantiae', reissue of Antoon Sanderus by Christiaan van Lom, 1726-1727, The Hague, 450 x 340 mm
Beautiful print that depicts the Grand Beguinage of Brussels, which has now largely disappeared, in its heyday. The first edition of the Chorographia Sacra Brabantiae (chorography means regional description) was published by the famous printer Antonius Sanderus (1586-1664) in 1659 and was an important historical-geographical description of the duchy of Brabant, with particular attention for the religious presence such as churches, abbeys and beguinages, with numerous accompanying illustrations in a bird's eye view. It was once a standard work in every abbey or castle library. Its immense popularity led to several re-releases over the years. This copy, expertly engraved by the Amsterdam artist Jacobus Harrewijn (1660-1727), who lived in Brussels, comes from the well-known reissue by Christiaan Lom, printed in The Hague in the early 18th century.
